The Green Card

The Green Card is the international insurance certificate that enables a vehicle to enter and circulate in a foreign country with insurance coverage (civil liability for automobiles) which is compulsory in the country visited.
The Green Card is issued under the responsibility of the national insurance office of the country in which the vehicle is registered.

WHICH COUNTRIES REQUIRE THE GREEN CARD?
You must be in possession of the Green Card for Italian vehicles intending to visit the following countries: Albania, Byelorussia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Iran, Israel, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldavia, Montenegro, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.

IN WHICH COUNTRIES IS THE GREEN CARD UNNECESSARY?
Vehicles registered in Italy can enter and circulate in the following foreign countries without the Green Card because their automobile insurance extends the guarantee to those countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Cyprus, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Holland, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakian Republic, Romania, Serbia (starting in 2012), Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE GREEN CARD?

It enables the driver of a vehicle who travels to a foreign country to enter and circulate in that country having fulfilled the obligations envisaged by the law of the country visited as regards automobile civil liability.

If the driver does not have a valid Green Card it will be necessary to purchase a temporary policy at the frontier of the country to be visited, in order to be allowed to enter the country.

Since the temporary insurance policy to be purchased at the frontier is much more expensive than the Green Card, it is a good idea for the driver to request a green card from the automobile insurance company before travelling abroad.
